7:03 pm - this is blog-worthy
|
Today I had my friend Katey over, we are working on healthier eating, so we did a little meal planning, and went grocery shopping, so we could cook dinner together tonight. I am also teaching her how to cook, which is pretty fun. So, there we were prepping kale and carrots, when I looked out the dining room window to see a very, very naked man on his balcony right across the street jacking off. Like, really going at it sort of jacking off. I turned away immediately and said, "oh my god is that really happening?!" and Katey looked at me quizzically. I glanced over my shoulder, and sure enough, it was really happening. I told her what was going on, and she had the unfortunate pleasure of seeing him as well. We hid for a minute, until it was over, and then closed the blinds. I called the non-emergency police line. I wasn't sure how important this sort of thing is because it's not like anybody got hurt, we just got grossed out, but they sent a police officer over. I informed the police officer that the man was aggressively masturbating. He laughed and asked if he could put that in the police report.
anyway, the point of this entry is to say that while hearing about this sort of thing is usually funny, it is not funny in the slightest, tiniest bit when you actually witness it, and I am certainly no prude. oh god, i want to hurl.
fuck it, i should've taken a picture.

7:47 am - yes we can.
|
We're pretty cynical about politicians around here, so I never thought I'd see anybody elected that I genuinely like, but Obama's words resonate with me, and I even think that he might mean them.
America this is quite serious. America this is the impression I get from looking in the television set. America is this correct? I'd better get right down to the job. It's true I don't want to join the Army or turn lathes in precision parts factories, I'm nearsighted and psychopathic anyway. America I'm putting my queer shoulder to the wheel.

3:40 pm - #sp
|
hey, former #skippypuppy types, I'm moving next weekend, and getting rid of some shit. Perhaps, if you have a VCR you'd like these:
Legendary Pink Dots - Live at La Luna Skippy Puppy - Live in Miami and Skinny Puppy - Live in Toronto & Amsterdam
I'd like these to go to a good home instead of Goodwill.

4:46 pm - birthday par-tay
|
Hey Portland peeps, I'm having a little birthday party tonight. There will be a ridiculous amount of chocolate cupcakes, so if you wanna swing by leave me a comment and I'll leave you the details. I'd love to see people I haven't seen in 18-million years!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I've heard a few too many times now people questioning Sarah Palin's ability to be a good mother and a Vice President. Naturally, this pisses me off. She has a husband, you know. It's shocking, but men do have the ability to be good parents.
Larry King asked Michelle Obama: "What do you make of her running for a vice president and having many kids and being a good parent and bouncing all the balls?"
Michelle Obama responded: "I think she provides an excellent of example of all the different roles that women can and should play, I'm a mother with kids and I've had a career and I've had to juggle. She's doing publicly what so many women are doing on their own privately. What we're fighting for is to make sure that all women have the choices that Sarah Palin and I have."
Oh, Michelle, it's so dreamy when you show your feminist side.

If you're looking for something to do tonight, consider coming to this benefit for my friend's dance company, Hot Little Hands. There will be dance, art, drag queens, and a dance party. What more do you want on a rainy Friday? Plus, I might do something dumb, like get drunk, and be all: "OMG I LOVE YOU SO MUCH YOU ARE SO AMAZING WHY DON'T WE HANG OUT MORE?" Followed by me rubbing my big butt on you because that's just how I roll.

8:10 am - big girl shoes
|
Charlie and I are going to Vegas for a few days next month for a wedding, and my birthday, so I thought it might be a good idea to buy a pair of high heels for the occasion. A girls gotta look snazzy when she's in Vegas, ya know. I'm sorta excited about them, so I took a picture:

Naturally, I posted it on flickr to share with all my girlfriends, but the thing about flickr is that there are some major perverts on there, and someone marked this photo as a favorite, which I thought was pretty odd considering how poor a photo it is, and then I look at his profile. omg ew. Thank goodness you can block people.

8:48 am - oh, how sad.
|
If is not often that a famous person's passing makes me feel even a twinge of emotion. Maybe I'm a cold, horrible person but I try not to get wrapped up in emotions that are necessarily relevant to me. Today I read that David Foster Wallace, the insane genius writer of Infinite Jest, killed himself. I gasped, put my hand to my mouth, and started to tear up. I can't believe it, and yet I can. Being that brilliant does not come with out torment. I am sad today, thinking of his wife, his family, his students, and all the writers that have been inspired by him. It is such an incredible loss, yet that is too trite to say.

8:25 am - RNC
|
For those of you that don't follow the news (and I don't blame you), be sure and take a trip over to cnn and watch the videos of police and protestors at the RNC. My favorite one: cops using their bikes to push a woman around, then pepper spraying her multiple times from just a few feet away, and pushing her to the ground. I got pepper sprayed once at a Bush protest in downtown PDX, just on the back of my neck, and it burned for hours. That woman is probably in agony. I understand that when "group think" takes over, and all these seemingly uncontrollable hormones are coursing through people's bodies that people make horrible decisions, but isn't there a point where just a bit of rational thought comes through and says, "wow, this is fucked up and I shouldn't be doing this to another human being."
I don't understand it.

I'm in love with this George Eastman quote:
“Light makes photography. Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography.” -- George Eastman

3:54 pm - I'm in love with film photography.
|
I used to think that I was boring, but I realized recently that I'm just old school.
Evidence: - I refused to text message up until recently. - I cook from scratch -- today I made peach jam. - I read the newspaper. - I think and talk about politics. - I want to dress like a woman from the 1940s (but I'm too cheap). - I believe in giving good customer service, and I believe that I should receive it. - I believe in being good at what you do, mediocrity sucks. (Charlie and I were just talking about this)
Most importantly, I've been taking pictures on film. I'm in love with the simplicity of it -- opening the shutter and exposing film to light.

6:21 pm - Today I made a bouquet
|
for George Michael. No, no, not this totally dreamy George Michael. This one , the not-so-dreamy-sorta-washed-up-pop-singer variety. I got a call from the agency that booked him to play tomorrow night in Seattle (why the Key Arena in Seattle is using a Portland based booking agency is beyond me), and the woman needed flowers for his dressing room. He wanted long-stemmed pink and white roses with lots of foliage.
Oh my, George Michael, you are cheesy, but I hope you like your flowers. I took extra care with them, and even carefully shined the leaves on the roses, and I never do stuff like that, so damnit, you better appreciate it!

7:49 pm - moving this weekend
|
Hey, if anyone wants to help us out with moving this weekend we'd really appreciate it. We were hoping that if we got a bunch of fabulous, fun, friends to help it would be pretty swell, and there'd be lots of laughing going on, and acting like douchebags.
Naturally, we'd get you drunk, and feed you amazing food afterwards because you know that we're all about that!

8:38 pm - we have some good things coming up.
|
-We're moving soon, five blocks from PSU. We are excited, and it's going to be an overall good situation for us, and the person we're renting from.
-I'm going to get into some serious bike commuting because we'll be just a few blocks from a really good bike shop. My definition of really good bike shop is: good customer service, doesn't treat me like a clueless jackass.
-Asparagus is in season. We ate it this morning coated in a thick, lemony hollandaise. Alongside some very, very orange scrambled eggs, and some multigrain bread from the Pearl Bakery.
-I've worked at my current job for almost five years, and it's making me miserable. I have this new manager who is possibly one of the dumbest people I've ever met, and in order to re-assure himself that he's smart he likes to tell everyone the same thing over and over again because we're probably too dumb to understand this capitalist thing. I think I'll be able to transfer to another Whole Foods in the next few months. I don't really want to quit, the pay is good, and the benefits are excellent. I don't know, though, I hate that I'm in charge of making money for a multi-national corporation, even if they aren't totally evil.

7:29 am - so, it's been a year.
|
Since our apartment burned down. Tonight, at about one a.m. to be precise. I thought it would teach me a grand life lesson, that's what these dramatic life events are supposed to do, right? I got a few small ones instead. I am resilient. I have great capacity for forgiveness. I can co-habitat with another human being in a small, moldy one bedroom apartment. I could write more, but I don't want to dwell.

8:12 pm - working sucks.
|
I love Sundays, they're just so calming. The only day when I really feel that it's okay to do absolutely nothing of consequence. No obligatory socializing, no running around doing errands (unless you want to!), maybe a long lunch will be involved, and for me there is always baking. I have to work this Sunday, helping privileged assholes have flowers for Easter, and that just makes me sad, so I'm posting here to pout about it.
I'm really into a golden brown color palate right now. It's probably my body manifesting its need for vitamin D. Happy Spring, everyone.

5:51 pm - Portland Friends: please save this date
|
Saturday, March 22nd, a benefit for my friend who I told you about a few months ago that was diagnosed with cancer. It's going to be held at AudioCinema. Located in the SE industrial area. $7 to $10 sliding scale.
We're working on getting some popular bands to play. We have The Shaky Hands, and members of the Dandy Warhols, and Decemberists that shop at our store, so we're going to be asking them. (hey, you never know!)
There's also going to be a silent auction. I'm working on getting some cool crafters from Etsy to donate, and some stuff from my friend that runs a bakery.
I would love to see all of you there -- all of the money is going to my friend.
and please tell your friends!

9:55 am - i'm gonna live in a loft, i'm gonna live in a loft...
|
Last night I found a craigslist apartment posting for a loft apartment on our favoritist (it's a word!) street, Alberta, above our favoritist breakfast joint, near my favoritist bus-line. I e-mailed and I'm going to look at it this morning. It has air conditioning! A bay window! is right next door to a co-op! and in the summer, the lamest farmer's market I've ever seen! and it's only $800, and now I'm skipping around our crusty apartment singing "i'm gonna live in a loft, i'm gonna live in a loft." So, please, cross your fingers for me that this place is spectacular. Don't you love nervous excitement? i'm going to have amazing dinner parties.
and, post picz plz:

every household requires a cow creamer.

9:17 am - meat recall, and this is why people are vegetarians.
|
This is the sort of shit going on at all confined animal feedlot operations across the country.
When I mentioned this to my friend Melissa yesterday, and said something about "you know, maybe this'll make people look at all the CAFO's" her response was "come on, you know that it won't." Of course, she's right, and I am always appreciative of someone else being the cynic for once. I was trying to think of something articulate to write on this subject, but I find it too infuriating to form coherent sentences, and I'm not even vegetarian. So, instead, I have a list of some of my favorite Portland restaurants where you can eat-the-shit out of some beef, and feel reasonably assured that you're not eating corn-fed-tortured-cow:
Clyde Common Kenny and Zukes Deli Toro Bravo Cafe Castagna Higgins Alberta St. Oyster Bar and Grill and they don't have a website, but Por Que No Taqueria
(also, most of these places have tasty vegetarian stuff)
and if you are a vegetarian, or an even more hardcore vegan you might do yourself a favor by dining at Nutshell.
and to make this post more pleasing here is a picture of my crusty sink,
